How the VA Payment Schedule Works

VA disability compensation is paid in arrears. The payment you receive on March 1 covers February. Under 38 USC 5111 entitlement begins the first day of the month following the month the award becomes effective, and the VA pays each monthly amount on the first business day of the month after the benefit month.

When the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the deposit moves to the last preceding business day. The VA never delays a payment past the first business day for calendar reasons.

Federal Holidays That Shift 2026 Payments

  • New Year's Day, Thursday, January 1, 2026
  • Independence Day observed, Friday, July 3, 2026
  • New Year's Day 2027, Friday, January 1, 2027, which pulls the December 2026 payment to December 31

The 2026 Cost of Living Increase

The 2026 rates reflect a 2.8% cost of living adjustment effective December 1, 2025. Because payments run one month behind, the first deposit at the new 2026 rate arrived on the first business day of January 2026.

If Your Payment Does Not Arrive

  • Give it one full business day. Banks post at different times of day.
  • Confirm your direct deposit information is current in your VA.gov profile.
  • Check whether a recent rating change, dependency update, or debt offset changed the amount.
  • Call the VA at 800-827-1000 if the deposit is still missing after two business days.

Direct deposit is the fastest and most reliable method. Paper checks are mailed on the same schedule but can take an additional 3 to 10 days to arrive.
